Tooth pain is a telltale sign that something’s amiss. An acute toothache could be due to severe tooth decay. If decay enters the pulp of your tooth, it can infect the blood vessels and nerves, triggering pain and inflammation. A checkup by Dr. Adnan Saleem can determine the cause of your pain and the severity of your condition. Severe pulpal infections need root canal treatment, which you can receive at Hebron Smiles and Smilebliss Orthodontics in Carrollton, Texas.Â
Root canal therapy is used to treat a severely decayed tooth where the infection has compromised the pulp of the tooth. The following is a step-by-step guide to this procedure:
Step 1 – Dr. Saleem will numb your tooth with local anesthesia for pain-free treatment.
Step 2 – We’ll place a dental dam (small rubber sheet) over your tooth to isolate it for treatment.
Step 3 – We’ll drill a hole through the crown of your tooth to gain access to the infected pulp and remove it, along with all infected tissues.
Step 4 – Once the pulp is removed, we’ll cleanse and disinfect the tooth chamber and canals of the remaining infection to keep it from spreading.
Step 5 – Using special dental tools, Dr. Saleem will widen the root canal area to make space for the gutta percha filling. We’ll then fill your tooth to seal it from future infection.
Step 6 – We’ll place an onlay or temporary crown over your tooth to strengthen its structure. If an onlay is used, your tooth is ready to go. A temporary crown will be replaced with a permanent crown in several weeks’ time once the permanent crown is made.
