Tooth extractions are done for a variety of reasons, most commonly if a tooth has been damaged by decay or trauma. Other reasons are overcrowding or wisdom tooth removal. If you are in the Carrollton, TX area and are about to undergo tooth extraction, you can follow a few simple aftercare tips to ensure the area heals properly.
Having a tooth removed is surgery, and it’s important to get adequate rest. Avoid exercise for the first day and try to keep your head up to minimize bleeding.
You should expect some mild pain following tooth extraction. Surgical extractions tend to cause more discomfort than simple extractions. Your doctor will probably prescribe a pain reliever for the first few days, and then recommend nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for afterward. Make sure to take these medications as directed.
Because cuts in the mouth bleed more than other parts of the body, you’ll need to allow time for a clot to form. You can bite down on gauze to apply pressure and allow a clot to form. Do not rinse or brush your teeth for the first 24 hours. After the first 24 hours, salt water rinses can help heal the socket. Also avoid chewing on the side of the extraction.
Both actions can cause the blood clot to pull out of the socket. Avoid smoking for as long as possible, but for at least 24-72 hours after the extraction.
In some cases, patients may develop dry socket which can be very painful. A medicated dressing can be prescribed to alleviate the pain and promote healing.
