As a child, losing a tooth is a rite of passage, with photos and notes to the tooth fairy. As an adult, tooth loss comes with far less fanfare and, in many cases, some anxiety and concern. Adult tooth loss is typically caused by decay that goes undetected before it can be treated or by trauma to the tooth, such as a fall. Regardless of how tooth loss occurs, patients often immediately ask, “what are my tooth replacement options?”
Dr. Adnan Saleem of Hebron Smiles and Smilebliss Orthodontics in Carrollton, TX, advises his patients that there are several tooth replacement options, including dental implants, dentures, and crown and bridge appliances:
While dental implants have great durability and longevity, the process does take some time. First the replacement tooth root must be inserted into the bone and the bone must be given time to heal. This ensures that the root is stable and secure. The healing process can take several months. Once the bone has healed, a replacement tooth is attached to the root using an abutment. With the replacement tooth in place, patients can speak clearly, smile confidently, and enjoy their favorite foods knowing their tooth is stable and secure.
